Which one to use

Picking an Instagram size

The feed takes three shapes. Portrait at 4:5 (1080 × 1350) is the tallest, so it fills the most of a phone screen while someone scrolls. Square at 1080 × 1080 is the safe default for a grid, and landscape at 1.91:1 is the shortest of the three.

Stories and Reels are full-screen vertical frames at 1080 × 1920. The profile picture is uploaded square at 320 × 320 and shown as a small circle, so nothing near its corners survives.

Before you export

Export feed posts in portrait unless the image only works wide. It is the largest of the three feed shapes.

Keep text away from the top and bottom of a Story or Reel, where Instagram draws its own controls over the frame.

Export every slide of a carousel at the same ratio, so the set looks like one piece when someone swipes.
