Twitter character counter, counted the way X counts

Paste a tweet to see its weight against X's 280 limit. A link costs 23 whatever its length, and an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character weighs 2. Too long? It splits into a thread you can copy.

X is the only platform here that weights characters. Bluesky counts graphemes, so an emoji is one, and everything else counts code points, so what you see is what it gets.

The rules

How X counts a post

X counts weight, not characters. The counter above runs the same rules Antwork's X publisher enforces, read from one rules file, so a post that fits here fits when Antwork sends it.

  1. 01

Most alphabets weigh 1 per character: Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Hebrew among them, with digits and common punctuation.

  2. 02

Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters weigh 2 each, so a post written only in them fits 140 characters.

  3. 03

Every emoji weighs 2, however many code points build it. A flag, a skin tone or a family still costs 2.

  4. 04

X rewrites every link to its t.co shortener and charges 23 for it, however long or short the original is.

  5. 05

Over 280, the counter splits the post into a thread on word boundaries, every part within the limit.

FAQ

Twitter character limits, answered

What is the Twitter character limit?
280 for a standard post on X. Accounts with X Premium can post longer, but this counter checks the 280 limit, which is the one Antwork publishes to.
Do links count toward the Twitter character limit?
Yes, at a flat 23 each. X rewrites every link to its t.co shortener, so a long tracking URL costs 23 and so does a short domain.
How do emoji count on X?
Every emoji weighs 2, including the ones built from several code points, like flags, skin tones and families. A counter that counts code points gets those wrong.
Why does Japanese or Chinese text run out sooner?
Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters weigh 2 each, so a post written only in them fits 140 characters, not 280.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Each space and each line break weighs 1.
How do I post something longer than the limit?
Split it into a thread. Paste the text above and the counter breaks it into parts that each fit, or open the thread maker for more control.
