"Not stated" means the vendor's own page does not say. It does not mean the feature is missing. Vendors change fast in this space, so open the linked page before relying on any single cell.

There is no official Instagram MCP server. Meta has not published one, and neither Anthropic nor OpenAI ships an Instagram connector. Every "Instagram MCP" you can install is third-party, and they do very different things: some publish posts, Reels and Stories through Meta's API, some answer your DMs and comments, some log in with your password and act like the Instagram app, and some only scrape public data.

This page sorts the twelve that come up most, using two sources only: each vendor's own documentation, and Meta's developer documentation for the Instagram Platform. Everything was checked on 12 October 2026, and every row links to where the fact came from. For servers that post to every network, not just Instagram, see social media MCP servers compared.

The three kinds of Instagram MCP server

Every server below is one of three kinds, and the kind decides what it can do and what it risks:

  1. Hosted, on Meta's official API. You sign in once (OAuth) on Instagram's or Facebook's own screen, and the server publishes through the API. No developer app, nothing to install. Antwork, Zernio, Buffer, Metricool, Postiz, Ayrshare and PostMCP.
  2. Automation bridges. Instagram is one connector among hundreds, used as a step in a wider workflow. Composio and Zapier. The do-it-yourself version of the official API, jlbadano/ig-mcp, sits close to this group: free, but you bring your own Meta app.
  3. Private API and scrapers. The server either logs in with your username and password through an unofficial client, so it can do what the app does, or it scrapes public pages without logging in at all. trypeggy/instagram_dm_mcp and Apify.

What Meta's API lets any MCP server do

Before comparing tools, it helps to know what Meta's official Instagram API allows. That list decides which MCP servers can be built "properly" and which can only work by logging in as you. It also answers most of the "why can't my AI do X on Instagram" questions.

What you want the AI to doOfficial API?ConditionsSource

Search hashtagsPartlyFacebook Login only, after App Review; "a maximum of 30 unique hashtags" per rolling 7 daysHashtag search

One inconsistency worth knowing: the same content publishing guide also says, in its carousel section, that accounts are limited to 50 published posts in 24 hours. Some vendors below quote 50, some quote 100. Plan for the lower figure.

Three practical consequences:

  1. Publishing is the job an ordinary app does best. Feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories are all in the API, which is why most of the servers below are publishing tools.
  2. Inbox work is possible, but only as replies. An official-API server can answer comments and reply to DMs within 24 hours of the last message. It cannot open a conversation.
  3. If a server follows, likes, sends the first DM or reads private accounts, it is not using Meta's API. It is either logged in with your password through an unofficial client or scraping, and that is where the account risk sits.

Pick by job, not by star count

  • Publish your own posts, carousels, Reels and Stories from Claude or ChatGPT. Use a hosted server with its own approved Meta app: you sign in once and never handle a token. Antwork, Zernio, Buffer, Metricool and Postiz are in this group.
  • Answer DMs and comments from the chat. Zernio. It is the only publishing server here that documents DM replies, comment moderation and insights alongside Reels and Stories, all on the official API.
  • Analytics and competitor research next to publishing. Metricool, with the caveat that its MCP does not cover inbox messages or comments.
  • Post as the last step of an automation (a new product, a new blog post). Composio or Zapier, where Instagram is one connector among many.
  • Public data from other accounts. Apify runs a scraper actor and bills per result. It publishes nothing.

Publishing servers, one by one

Antwork

OursVendor docs ↗

A hosted MCP server at https://api.antwork.io/mcp. You add the URL to your AI app, sign in, and connect Instagram once on Instagram's own login screen. It uses the Instagram API with Instagram Login through Antwork's own app, so there is no Facebook Page to link, no developer app to register and no token to paste. It publishes feed images, carousels of up to ten items with images and video mixed, Reels and Stories, and schedules them. Instagram only accepts JPEG images, and Antwork checks that when you attach a file rather than at publish time. Before drafting, your AI reads that account's recent posts so captions start from how you already write, and every post lands as a draft you approve before it is scheduled or published. It reads like and comment counts on your own posts, and covers LinkedIn, X, Threads, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest from the same connection.

Limits
It does not read or send DMs, does not reply to or moderate comments on Instagram, and does not browse, follow or like other accounts. Instagram reach and views are not available yet while Meta reviews Antwork's insights permission. If inbox work is the job, Zernio is the better answer.

The most complete official-API server here. Its old domain, getlate.dev, now redirects to zernio.com. Its Instagram MCP page covers feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories, published now or scheduled, plus the inbox: it reads and replies to DMs within Meta's window, and reads, replies to, hides and deletes comments. It also reads account reach, follower history, demographics and story insights. Its docs say Instagram Login is the default, with "no Facebook Page involved", and that it counts against a 100-posts-per-24-hours cap. The MCP server is free; you pay per connected account, and outgoing DMs are metered after the first 10,000 a month.

Buffer's MCP at https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp creates and schedules posts, manages your queue and saves ideas, and its MCP page says it is "included on every plan, including Free". For Instagram, Buffer's support article lists what publishes automatically on Business or Creator accounts: single images, carousels, video (always as a Reel) and Stories. Music on posts and Stories, stickers, product tags and Story links fall back to notification publishing, where you finish in the Instagram app.

The strongest analytics tool here. Its MCP at https://ai.metricool.com/mcp lets your AI create and publish posts and "see and download all your metrics and reports", and works on the Free plan with Free's limits, including no more than 20 scheduled posts. Its Instagram help article says feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories auto-publish on Business or Creator accounts. Its pages disagree on the inbox: the connect guide lists inbox messages and comments, while its limits page says they are "not available through the MCP at the moment". Treat the inbox as unavailable until that is settled.

The open-source option, with an OAuth MCP endpoint and no API key needed for it. Its Instagram docs offer two connections: Instagram Standalone, which needs a professional account and no Facebook Page, and Facebook Business. It publishes single images, carousels, video and Reels, and Stories. Two honest limits from its own docs: music on Reels only works through the Facebook Business connection, and Story link stickers are not supported. Hosted plans start at $29 a month after a 7-day trial.

A developer API first, with a 33-tool MCP. On Instagram it publishes images, videos, carousels, Reels and Stories (Stories on Business accounts only), and needs the account linked to a Facebook Page. Its Messages API covers Instagram DMs on Business plans, with conversations started by the other person. It authenticates only with a static API key, and its setup page says a claude.ai personal connector "cannot send a static Authorization: Bearer header", so it points you to Claude Code and similar clients instead.

Connects through Instagram Login, so a Business or Creator account works without a linked Facebook Page. It publishes photos, Reels and carousels of 2 to 10 items, and schedules them with a date, time and timezone. You authenticate to it with a PostMCP API key. Its Instagram page does not mention Stories. The free plan gives 20 credits a month, and publishing costs one credit per profile.

Composio and Zapier

Composio exposes 29 Instagram tools through a managed OAuth app: media containers and carousels, comments, DMs in an existing conversation, mentions and insights. Its tool list does not include Reels or Stories publishing. Zapier's Instagram for Business MCP has two actions, Publish Photo(s) (a single post or carousel) and Publish Video (as a Reel), and both say they "will only work for an Instagram Business Account", so a Creator account may not work. Both are best when Instagram is one step in a bigger workflow.

jlbadano/ig-mcp

Vendor docs ↗

The do-it-yourself route on the official API: free and open source, but you create your own Facebook app, link the Instagram account to a Facebook Page and paste a long-lived token that expires after 60 days. It reads your profile, media and insights, publishes images and videos, and reads and replies to DMs, which its README says requires Advanced Access approval from Meta. It does not schedule.

Private API and scraping servers

trypeggy/instagram_dm_mcp is the best-known DM server on GitHub. It logs in with your Instagram username and password, saves a session file, and its requirements pin instagrapi, an unofficial Instagram client. That is how it can do what Meta's API does not allow: send the first message, list and search chats, and read other users' posts, stories, followers and following. Its README carries no warning about account risk, so here is ours: Meta's API only lets apps in through Instagram Login or Facebook Login, and this is not either of those. Use it only on an account you can afford to lose. It does not publish posts.

Apify runs an Instagram Scraper actor that extracts public posts, Reels, profiles, hashtags and comments with "No Business or Creator account, no OAuth". You reach it from Claude through Apify's hosted MCP at https://mcp.apify.com, and it bills per result. Bright Data offers a similar public-data MCP with a free tier of 5,000 requests a month. Neither publishes anything.

If your goal is posting, none of these is the right tool, however many stars they have.

How to connect an Instagram MCP server

The steps are the same for any hosted server. Here they are with Antwork's URL; swap in your vendor's. Whatever the server, the Instagram account must be Business or Creator. Switching is free in the Instagram app's settings.

  • Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop): Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste https://api.antwork.io/mcp, sign in, then ask Claude to connect Instagram. The full walkthrough is in how to connect Claude to Instagram.
  • ChatGPT: turn on Developer mode in Settings → Security and login, open Plugins in the sidebar, click +, and paste the URL. ChatGPT only accepts remote servers, so local GitHub servers will not work here. Walkthrough: how to connect ChatGPT to Instagram.
  • Claude Code: run claude mcp add antwork --transport http https://api.antwork.io/mcp, then /mcp to sign in.
  • Cursor: add the URL as a remote MCP server in Cursor's MCP settings.

Then ask for something concrete:

Before you give an AI publish rights

  • Prefer OAuth over passwords and pasted tokens. An OAuth grant can be revoked from Instagram's settings. A password in a .env file is the whole account.
  • Keep a review step. An assistant with publish rights and an untrusted document in its context (an email, a web page) can be talked into posting. Choose a server that creates drafts and publishes only on an explicit request.
  • Know the ceiling. Meta caps API publishing per account per 24 hours, and its own guide gives both 100 and 50. No tool gets around that.
  • Match the tool to the job. Use a password-based or scraping server only for work that genuinely needs it, and never on an account you cannot afford to lose. More on what Antwork does and does not do is in the MCP docs, and prices are on the pricing page.

Post from your AI, in your own voice.

Connect Claude or ChatGPT once. Drafts start from your recent posts, and nothing goes out until you approve it.

FAQ

Instagram MCP servers, answered

Does Instagram have an official MCP server?
No. Meta publishes no Instagram MCP server and no official Instagram connector for Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. Every Instagram MCP server is built by a third party, either on Meta's Instagram API with your permission, or by logging in to Instagram with your password or scraping public pages.
Can Claude post to Instagram?
Yes, through a third-party MCP server that you add as a custom connector. Hosted servers such as Antwork, Zernio, Buffer, Metricool and Postiz work in claude.ai because they have a public URL and an OAuth sign-in. The step-by-step guide is at antwork.io/automate/claude/instagram.
Can an Instagram MCP server post to a personal account?
Not through Meta's API. Meta's content publishing guide covers Instagram professional accounts, and the platform overview says app users 'must have an Instagram professional account'. Switching a personal account to Creator is free in Instagram's settings.
Can an Instagram MCP server send DMs?
Only as replies. Meta's messaging docs say 'Conversations only begin when an Instagram user sends a message to your app user', and your app has 24 hours to respond. Zernio, Composio and Ayrshare offer DM replies on the official API. Servers that start conversations, such as trypeggy/instagram_dm_mcp, log in with your password through an unofficial client.
Can an Instagram MCP server publish Reels and Stories?
Yes, if the vendor built it. Meta's API publishes Reels with media_type REELS and Stories with media_type STORIES. Antwork, Zernio, Buffer, Metricool, Postiz and Ayrshare state Stories; Zapier publishes video as a Reel but does not mention Stories. Stories with link stickers or polls are not exposed by the API, so tools send those as a phone notification instead.
Does an Instagram MCP server need a Facebook Page?
It depends on how it logs in. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login needs no Facebook Page. The Instagram API with Facebook Login requires the Instagram account to be linked to a Page. Antwork, Zernio (by default), Postiz's standalone option and PostMCP use Instagram Login; Ayrshare and jlbadano/ig-mcp need a linked Page.
Is there a free Instagram MCP server?
Yes. Buffer and Metricool include their MCP on their Free plans, Zernio and Antwork make the first two connected accounts free, Composio has a free plan, and the open-source GitHub servers are free. The cost with open-source servers is setup time, and for the ones that log in with your password, account risk.
